1877 is the key date of the Indian Head cent series, struck in Philadelphia with a mintage of just 852,500 — the lowest of any regular-issue date in the series and roughly one-tenth the output of surrounding years. The cause was a sharp economic contraction following the Panic of 1873, which had so thoroughly suppressed commerce that demand for cents simply collapsed. The Mint struck only what was needed.
The "Zombie" designation refers to artificial enhancement — cleaning, tooling, or chemical treatment applied to a worn or damaged example to simulate higher grade. Collectors use the term specifically because the coin looks alive but isn't.
