The obverse features a laureate draped bust of Queen Victoria facing left, engraved by Leonard Charles Wyon in the style characteristic of his bun-head portraits. The Queen's hair is elaborately dressed, gathered at the nape with a ribbon, and adorned with a wreath of laurel leaves. A floral spray is visible at the truncation of the bust. The peripheral legend is separated by raised dots and reads VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:, and the field is framed by a toothed border. |

The reverse displays a decorative garland composed of purple pitcher plants (Sarracenia purpurea), the emblematic insectivorous plant of Newfoundland, interspersed with oak leaves. At the centre of the composition, the Royal Crown is prominently depicted above the date. The legend ONE CENT 1864 NEWFOUNDLAND encircles the design, with the denomination and issuer name separated by the central motif. The entire design is enclosed within a toothed border, and the die was engraved by Horace Morehen. |
