| 裏面の説明 | Central design featuring the Royal Crown above the date 1864, surrounded by a wreath composed of purple pitcher plants — Newfoundland's emblematic insectivorous flora — intertwined with oak leaves and acorns, engraved by Horace Morehen. The denomination ONE CENT arcs above and NEWFOUNDLAND curves along the lower periphery, all in Latin script. The composition is enclosed within a toothed border and reflects the distinctive regional heraldic character intended for the proposed Newfoundland coinage series. |

Newfoundland's 1864 cent patterns were produced in London as part of the evaluation process before the colony settled on its coinage design ahead of Confederation discussions. The Boulton reference places this among a small series of competing submissions — the "Bo#25" designation situates it within Matthew Young Boulton's pattern documentation, suggesting London Mint involvement in the trial striking. Very few examples were preserved outside institutional collections.
