Beschrijving keerzijde Central design features a crowned Royal Crown flanked by a symmetrical garland composed of pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea) blossoms and leaves — the floral emblem of Newfoundland — intertwined with oak leaves and acorns. The date of issue appears within or immediately below the crown at the centre of the composition. The denomination ONE CENT arcs above the central design, while NEWFOUNDLAND arcs along the lower periphery, with the full legend reading ONE CENT / date / NEWFOUNDLAND around the wreath motif.

Aanvullende informatie

Newfoundland's decision to issue its own coinage in 1865 reflected the colony's distinct commercial identity — one it was determined to maintain even as Confederation talks were already underway on the mainland. The cent was struck at the Royal Mint in London throughout the series, never at a Canadian facility, a deliberate choice that underscored Newfoundland's continued orientation toward Britain rather than toward the new Dominion it would not join until 1949.

The 1873 and 1876 issues are notably scarcer than others in the run, with mintages well below the series norm.
