| Obverse description | The coat of arms of the British North Borneo Chartered Company occupies the central field, featuring a shield bearing a sailing vessel, supported on either side by standing native figures in traditional dress, each holding a spear. Above the shield, a lion passant surmounts the crest, and below, a scroll carries the motto legend. The mintmark 'H' for Heaton appears at the base of the design, with the entire composition enclosed within a beaded border. |

The British North Borneo Chartered Company received its royal charter in 1881, and the following year conducted trial strikes in aluminium to test denominations and dies before committing to bronze for circulation coinage. Aluminium was a practical proofing material — cheap, easily struck, and distinct enough from production metals that trial pieces couldn't enter circulation unnoticed. Very few of these 1882 trials are known to survive.
