Belize achieved independence from Britain in 1981, but these cents were struck while the country still operated as British Honduras under a new name adopted in 1973 — a transitional period when the currency was being redenominated and rebranded ahead of full sovereignty. The Franklin Mint handled production under contract, which was common for newly restructured Caribbean and Central American issues during the 1970s.
The kite depicted is native to the region and breeds in the lowland forests of the Belizean interior — a deliberate nod to national fauna over colonial symbolism.
