Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a finely detailed depiction of a Swallow-Tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus) in full flight, rendered in high relief against a plain field, its characteristic deeply forked tail and broad wingspan clearly articulated. The denomination numeral 1 appears prominently in the upper right of the field, with the legend CENT immediately to its right. A secondary smaller bird is visible in the lower field beneath the principal figure. A continuous beaded border follows the inner edge of the scalloped flan.

Aanvullende informatie

Belize adopted a new coinage series in 1974, two years after achieving independence from Britain, with denominations featuring native wildlife selected partly to distinguish the new national currency from its colonial predecessor. The swallow-tailed kite, a migratory raptor that passes through Belize seasonally, was assigned to the one-cent denomination — the lowest in the series and the one most likely to disappear from circulation quickly given aluminum's light weight and the coin's minimal purchasing power by the early 1980s.
