Good Deal Supermarkets was a regional chain operating in northern New Jersey, and these small-denomination staff scrip notes were almost certainly issued as internal wage supplements or employee discount tokens — a practice that persisted among mid-century American retailers well past the point where most industries had abandoned it. The legal status of such scrip under New Jersey labor law was ambiguous at best, and several retail chains in the region quietly discontinued similar schemes following state scrutiny in the 1970s.
The twenty-year date spread reflects uncertainty rather than a long print run — single-issue scrip of this type rarely survives in quantity.
