Additional information

2013 was sede vacante twice over — Benedict XVI abdicated in February, and Francis was elected in March. Vatican euro coinage from this transitional year exists in two distinct portrait varieties, making the issuing authority technically in flux for the bulk of the minting calendar. Specimen strikes from sede vacante or early Francis issues attract collector premiums well above face precisely because the window was so narrow.
