This piece was struck as part of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) coinage program, a United Nations initiative that recruited dozens of nations throughout the 1960s and 1970s to issue coins bearing agricultural themes as a vehicle for promoting food production awareness. Swaziland participated during a period when the country was actively developing its sugar industry — by the mid-1970s, sugar had become the kingdom's dominant export crop, largely through the Mhlume and Simunye estates.
Sobhuza II was, at the time of minting, already the longest-reigning monarch in the world — a distinction he held until his death in 1982 after over 60 years on the throne.
