Behind the lion, a liberty cap surmounts a pole, symbolising freedom and the abolitionist ideals of the Sierra Leone Company. The circumferential legend reads SIERRA LEONE COMPANY arching above, with AFRICA positioned in the lower exergual area. The coin's border is decorated with a continuous beaded rim. The design was engraved by Conrad Heinrich Küchler at the Soho Mint, Birmingham, in the accomplished Neo-classical style characteristic of Matthew Boulton's establishment. |
