Singapore's copper-plated zinc cent replaced the earlier bronze composition in 1992 for most circulation strikes, making 1991 one of the transitional years where planchet sourcing was shifting. The "ribbon upwards" designation distinguishes this from the ribbon downwards variety — a distinction created by the orientation of the ribbon on the reverse's heraldic device, which collectors and catalogers formalized after die varieties were identified across the series.
