Pick-N-Pay was a Cleveland-based supermarket chain, and the presence of Louisville-issued scrip under the Consolidated Sales / Grocery 76 umbrella reflects the fragmented regional franchise and subsidiary structure the company operated through during its mid-century expansion across the Midwest and Upper South. Food stamp scrip at the 1-cent denomination existed almost entirely to make change against U.S. government food stamp booklets, which were issued in fixed denominations — retailers issued fractional scrip so customers could recover odd-cent remainders without forfeiting value.
