Thorofare Markets was a supermarket chain based in Youngstown, Ohio, that issued these small paper cents as in-store change scrip — a practical workaround for the chronic coin shortages that periodically plagued American retail during the mid-twentieth century. The Pennyfare Division name suggests a dedicated pricing or promotional program rather than the main grocery operation itself.
Merchant scrip of this type had no legal tender status and was redeemable only at issuing locations, making accumulation by customers an unintentional float that benefited the retailer directly.
