Obverse description Central device features the Zimbabwe Bird, a stylised soapstone bird figure derived from Great Zimbabwe, perched atop a decorative plinth with geometric patterning. The date 1980 is divided across the field, with '19' to the left and '80' to the right of the bird. The legend 'ZIMBABWE-RHODESIA' curves along the lower periphery. The engraver's initials 'LDL' appear in small characters beneath the plinth. The overall design reflects the transitional political identity of the issuing authority at the time of independence.
