| 背面描述 | Two stylized wheat stalks flank the central field, their heads curving inward at the top and their stems meeting at the base, forming a wreath-like frame. The denomination ONE CENT appears prominently in two lines at center, with the issuer legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA inscribed in two lines below. The motto E · PLURIBUS · UNUM arcs along the upper periphery between the tips of the wheat ears. |

In 1920, the U.S. Mint was actively exploring a smaller cent to replace the large-format Lincoln cent then in circulation — efforts that would not bear fruit until the official reduction in 1982. Pattern pieces from this period were struck in limited numbers for internal evaluation and were never released to the public, leaving survivorship almost entirely dependent on what escaped the melting pot through official channels or collector acquisition from Mint employees.
