Liberia's 1868 pattern issues were produced experimentally in Philadelphia as the young republic worked to establish a coherent coinage system — a process complicated by chronic dependence on foreign currency, particularly U.S. cents, which circulated freely alongside any official Liberian issue. KM#Pn15 is one of several copper pattern cents explored that year, none of which advanced to circulation. The Philadelphia Mint struck patterns for Liberia on a quasi-commercial basis throughout the mid-to-late nineteenth century, with Liberian government authorization often ambiguous or after the fact.
