| Opmerkingen |
Prisoner of war canteen scrip issued by U.S. Army harbor defense installations around Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, under the Geneva Convention obligation to provide POWs access to a canteen using non-negotiable currency. The scrip prevented prisoners from accumulating U.S. legal tender, which could facilitate escape or black-market activity outside the wire.
Harbor defense canteen issues are among the more obscure categories of American PoW scrip — overshadowed by larger camp series from the interior — and surviving low-denomination pieces like this 1 cent value rarely appear in dedicated scrip auctions.
