A piece of merchant scrip from Miller's Fairway Foods in Jamestown, North Dakota — the kind of fractional note that grocery and general merchandise stores across the American Midwest issued through much of the mid-twentieth century to handle small-change transactions without relying on coin. Fairway Foods operated as a cooperative wholesale grocery chain supplying independent retailers across the upper Midwest, and individual store-branded scrip of this type was a local arrangement, not a chain-wide policy.
These notes were never redeemable outside the issuing store and rarely survived long after the store stopped honoring them.
