Magnamart Food Warehouse was a regional grocery chain operating in San Antonio during the latter half of the twentieth century. Store-issued scrip of this kind — denominated in fractional cents — was used as change substitute at the checkout, a practice that surged briefly when U.S. coin shortages created real headaches for retailers in the 1960s and early 1970s. Whether this particular piece dates to that shortage period or represents a later house policy is difficult to pin down without dated examples for comparison.
Paper scrip redeemable only at the issuing store had no legal tender status and was entirely dependent on the retailer's continued operation — which makes survival of any example contingent on a customer never returning to spend it.
