Lawndale Stop-Shop was a Chicago grocery chain operating in the North Lawndale neighborhood, a predominantly Black community on the city's West Side. Trade tokens and paper scrip issued by local retailers were common instruments in mid-twentieth century American urban retail — effectively forcing repeat custom by keeping small change circulating within a single store or chain rather than bleeding out to competitors.
Paper scrip at this denomination was cheaper to produce than metal tokens and easier to issue in volume. Whether this piece dates to the postwar boom years or the neighborhood's sharper economic decline after the 1968 riots is not established from the note alone.
