IGA (Independent Grocers Alliance) store scrip of this type was issued by individual franchise owners to function as change tokens or promotional currency — a practice that persisted well into the late 1960s in parts of the Midwest where coin shortages made small-denomination transactions awkward. Kleins IGA No. 4 in Lincoln, Nebraska was one of hundreds of independent operators who printed their own fractional notes rather than rely on the federal mint to keep pennies in circulation.
