Obverse description Left-facing bust of Liberty represented as a Native American princess, wearing a feathered headdress with the word LIBERTY inscribed on the headband, her hair falling loosely behind the neck and secured by a beaded necklace. The portrait, engraved by James Barton Longacre, occupies the center of the field in high relief. The surrounding legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the periphery, with the date 1859 positioned in the lower exergual area. The coin is bordered by a finely dentilated rim.
