Obverse description Left-facing effigy of Liberty depicted as a classical female bust adorned with a large feathered Native American war bonnet, the headband inscribed with the legend LIBERTY. The circular legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs around the periphery, with the date 1863 positioned centrally at the bottom of the field. The design is engraved in high relief with fine detail in the feathers and facial features, all within a dentilated border.
