The original 1911 cent is notorious in Canadian numismatics for its omission of "DEI GRA" — the customary acknowledgment of George V's divine authority — an oversight that earned the issue the nickname "Godless" cents almost immediately after release. Public and clerical pressure was swift enough that the inscription was restored the following year. This 2017 silver restrike reproduces the small leaves obverse specifically tied to that controversial first year, making the historical gaffe the entire point of the piece.
