American prisoner of war camps during World War II issued their own scrip to prevent German and Italian POWs from accumulating U.S. currency that could aid escape attempts. Camp Greeley's issues followed the broad War Department directive, but camp-specific scrip was produced locally rather than through a centralized federal print run — meaning individual camp issues vary considerably in production quality and surviving quantities.
Greeley held primarily German POWs who were contracted out to local sugar beet farmers, a labor arrangement authorized under the Geneva Convention. The scrip circulated exclusively within the camp canteen system.
