Giant Food & Liquor, Inc. was one of hundreds of American retailers that issued fractional paper scrip during the mid-twentieth century to avoid making change in coin — particularly useful during periods when small-denomination coinage was in short supply or simply inconvenient at high-volume checkout counters. Chicago had a particularly dense retail scrip culture, with competing grocery chains issuing their own cent denominations that were, in practice, only redeemable at the issuing store. Locally printed, locally redeemed, and almost never saved.
