正面描述 Left-facing crowned effigy of King George VI, modeled by engraver Percy Metcalfe, whose initials PM appear below the truncation. The king wears the Tudor Crown with elaborate fleur-de-lis and cross-pattee ornaments. The circumferential legend, engraved in raised Latin lettering, reads GEORGIVS VI DEI GRA. REX ET IND. IMP., encircling the portrait and separated from the milled rim by a fine dentilated border. The portrait is rendered in a restrained, naturalistic style with clean, precise relief characteristic of Royal Mint production of the period.

附加信息

Newfoundland maintained its own coinage well into the 20th century as a self-governing Dominion, but by 1938 that status was already a fiction — the Dominion had surrendered responsible government in 1934 under the weight of bankruptcy, replaced by an appointed Commission of Government answerable to London. These cents were struck at the Royal Mint's Birmingham branch (the Mint's contractor, the King's Norton works) for a polity that no longer governed itself. When Newfoundland voted in 1948 to join Canada, this series became obsolete overnight, making the final 1947-dated pieces the last distinctly Newfoundland coins ever struck.
