The "DEI GRA" abbreviation was added to George V's Canadian coinage following a public controversy over the 1910 Edward VII cents, which omitted "Dei Gratia" entirely — an oversight that drew sharp criticism from clergy and conservative press alike. The corrected formula appeared from 1912 onward across the new George V series.
The 1920 date closes this specific type; production shifted that year to a smaller, lighter cent, ending the large cent format Canada had used since Confederation.
