The Fugio cent holds the distinction of being the first coin officially authorized by the United States government, approved by the Continental Congress on July 6, 1787. The contract for striking went to James Jarvis, a Connecticut businessman whose arrangement quickly soured — he absconded with a substantial quantity of the copper supplied by the government, delivering far fewer coins than contracted. Estimates suggest he shorted the federal supply by tens of thousands of planchets worth of metal.
The numerous KM references reflect a genuinely complex die study. Varieties proliferate across pointed rays versus club rays, STATES UNITED versus UNITED STATES legends, and differing reverse treatments — Newman's research catalogued over forty die marriages.
