Obverse description Right-facing bust effigy of Jan van Riebeeck (1619–1677), Dutch colonial administrator and founder of the Cape Colony settlement, rendered in high relief. The portrait is modeled in a naturalistic style consistent with the engraving of Tommy Sasseen. The legend 'SOUTH AFRICA' arcs along the upper periphery, with the date and engraver's initials 'T.S.' positioned in the lower field flanking the truncation.

Reverse description Two Cape Sparrows (Passer melanurus) are depicted perched on bare thorny branches, one positioned to the upper left and the other to the lower right, both rendered in fine naturalistic detail. The denomination '1c' appears prominently in the upper field above the birds, with the numeral '1' in large format and the letter 'c' to its right. The engraver's initials 'T.S.' appear in the lower field beneath the branch composition. The overall design is clean and uncluttered, with the birds occupying the central field against a smooth, polished background.
