Canada officially discontinued the one-cent coin in 2013, making this 2017 issue a deliberate commemorative callback rather than a circulating piece. The Rock Dove reverse was chosen to echo the original 1967 centennial cent designed by Alex Colville — one of the most celebrated coin design commissions in Canadian history, marking the country's 100th year of Confederation. This 2017 version extends that anniversary series, struck in gold-plated .9999 silver for the collector market rather than as a monetary instrument.
