Belize gained independence from Britain in 1981, but the Central Bank had already begun issuing its own coinage five years earlier under the new national identity, replacing the Eastern Caribbean currency that had circulated during the colonial period. The aluminium composition was a practical choice for a low-denomination coin in a small economy — the metal's cost kept production viable long after the cent's purchasing power had effectively collapsed.
The series ran for 45 years with minimal alteration, a longevity that speaks more to institutional inertia than demand.
