Bermuda switched from copper-plated steel to copper-plated zinc for this cent type, producing a non-magnetic variant that ran parallel to — and eventually replaced — the earlier magnetic planchets. The Bermuda Monetary Authority sourced blanks from outside the island, as Bermuda has never operated its own mint, with striking contracted to the Royal Mint.
The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was adopted across most Commonwealth territories beginning in 1998.
