Canada's shift to copper-plated steel cents in 1999 was driven purely by economics — the rising cost of zinc had made the previous composition increasingly unviable. The magnetic steel core allowed automated sorting and rejection in vending machines, though this also accelerated the coin's eventual demise: by 2012, the cent cost over two cents to produce and distribute, a fact the Harper government cited directly when announcing its elimination in the federal budget that March.
The RCM logo privy mark distinguishes this issue from the non-logo transitional pieces struck concurrently for circulation.
