Fiji's cent coinage of this period was produced at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, which had taken over striking duties from the Royal Mint following Fiji's independence and the gradual repatriation of Commonwealth minting contracts during the 1970s. The third portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Raphael Maklouf, was introduced across Commonwealth coinage from 1985 onward. Fiji adopted it promptly, making these 1986–1987 issues among the earlier colonial and post-colonial territories to circulate the new effigy.
Fiji decimalized in 1969, replacing the pound system. By 1990, the one-cent piece had become effectively worthless in daily commerce and was discontinued.
