Canada's one-cent coin was officially eliminated by the federal government in March 2012 on cost grounds — it was spending 1.6 cents to produce each penny. The farewell collector issue followed almost immediately, struck in fine silver as a deliberate irony: a coin worth far more than a cent, commemorating one worth less than nothing to produce.
The 2.94g weight matches the circulating penny's dimensions exactly — a conscious choice by the RCM to preserve physical authenticity in the tribute piece.
