Tuvalu's first decimal coinage, issued at independence in 1976, was struck at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra — a practical choice given Australia's longstanding administrative role in what had been the Ellice Islands portion of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony. The split from Kiribati was formalized that same year after a 1974 referendum in which Tuvaluan islanders voted decisively to separate, partly over concerns that Gilbertese Micronesians would dominate a unified state.
The bronze alloy matches the contemporary Australian cent almost exactly, a residual standardization from the colonial monetary relationship.
