The 1953 issue launched with two distinct varieties created within the same year — the "no shoulder fold" and "shoulder fold" types, reflecting a mid-year modification to the Gillick portrait after Canadian officials objected that the original relief rendered poorly in production. The revised design added drapery detail to the Queen's shoulder, and both varieties now command separate catalog entries.
This series also saw a wire rim versus flat rim distinction in 1953 that continues to drive variety collectors. The flat rim, shoulder fold combination is the scarcest of the four possible pairings from that first year.
