Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, modelled by Mary Gillick after her 1953 portrait at approximately age 27. The Queen wears a wreath of laurel in her hair, with her hair arranged in a refined coiffure. The legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA encircles the portrait, interrupted at the base by the truncation of the bust. Two varieties exist for this type: the original 'no shoulder fold' (NSF) design and the revised 'shoulder fold' (SF) variant introduced mid-1953, distinguished by a line of drapery across the Queen's shoulder.

Reverse description A stylised two-leaf maple twig with two seeds, designed by George Kruger Gray, occupies the centre of the reverse field. The denomination 1 CENT appears above the twig and the country name CANADA below, with the date positioned at the lower right. The designer's initials K·G appear to the lower right of the central device. The design is framed by a dentilated border running the full circumference of the coin.
