Trinidad and Tobago's decimal coinage was introduced in 1966 when the country converted from the British West Indies dollar, and the cent series that followed was struck at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant — the facility that had only just relocated from Tower Hill in 1968. The 1974–1976 bronze cents fall within a period when the country was riding an early wave of oil revenue, yet the government maintained the modest bronze composition rather than switching to cheaper aluminum, as several neighboring Caribbean states had already done.
