Hong Kong's 1 cent note persisted as a functioning instrument of daily commerce long after paper of that denomination had become economically absurd almost everywhere else. The note survived because of rounding conventions in retail pricing — fractional cent amounts remained common in markets and wet shops well into the 1980s, keeping the denomination technically necessary rather than merely ceremonial.
Five Financial Secretaries signed across the run, Bradbury Wilkinson producing the notes in New Malden until the firm was absorbed by De La Rue in 1986 — after which the final two signature varieties were printed under different ownership despite retaining the same imprint.
