Boyd's Inc. was one of thousands of American retailers that issued their own scrip during the Depression years, when hoarding of coins left small businesses unable to make change. These cent-denomination pieces were purely practical instruments — accepted in-store and worthless the moment the issuer closed or redeemed outstanding stock. Sheridan, Wyoming was a modest ranching and coal-mining town in this period, and local scrip of this type rarely traveled far or survived in quantity.
