Bohack was a Brooklyn-based grocery chain that operated across the New York metropolitan area from the late nineteenth century until its bankruptcy in 1977. These fractional cent notes were issued as trading stamps redeemable in-store — a promotional mechanism common among American supermarket chains during the postwar decades, when intense competition for customer loyalty drove retailers toward increasingly elaborate redemption schemes. Bohack's collapse came after a protracted struggle with rising costs and competition from larger chains, and the corporation filed for Chapter 11 protection before ultimately liquidating.
Notes from the final years of the program are considerably scarcer than early issues.
