| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Jan van Riebeeck (1619–1677), Dutch colonial administrator and founder of Cape Town, rendered in high relief with naturalistic portrait style. The legend 'SUID-AFRIKA' appears to the right of the portrait in the field, identifying the issuer in Afrikaans. The date and engraver's initials 'T.S.' appear within the legend. The design is contained within a plain raised rim with no exergue line. |
