Additional information

Vatican euro cents are struck under a formal agreement with the European Union that grants the Holy See the right to mint euro-denominated coinage despite not being an EU member state. The 2012 issue falls within the sede plena period of Benedict XVI's pontificate, roughly two years before his historic resignation in February 2013 — the first papal abdication since Gregory XII in 1415.

Annual Vatican mintages are tightly capped, and coins are distributed primarily through the Philatelic and Numismatic Office rather than general circulation, which is why uncirculated survivors vastly outnumber worn examples.
