Bonaire adopted the US dollar as its official currency on 1 January 2011, the same day the island became a special municipality of the Netherlands following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles. These cent pieces were issued for transitional circulation alongside US coinage, though the dollar's dominance made them largely redundant from the outset. Most were absorbed by collectors rather than trade.
