Obverse description The obverse features the George Cross at centre, rendered as a bold raised cross with squared arms, its intersection bearing a circular medallion depicting a mounted knight in the manner of the original George Cross medal, surrounded by the legend FOR GALLANTRY. Four seahorses are positioned symmetrically in the four quadrants between the arms of the cross. The country name MALTA arcs along the upper field in large capital letters, while the date 1972 is inscribed along the lower field. The entire design is contained within a beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse displays the large numeral 1 at centre, executed in a bold lined style, framed by an ornate decorative wreath of ivy or vine leaves and tendrils that sweeps from the lower left, arches across the upper field, and descends to the lower right. The denomination CENT is inscribed in capital letters along the lower field beneath the numeral. The design is enclosed by a beaded border running along the inner rim.
