Guyana's first domestic coinage issued after independence in 1966 replaced the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority issues that had circulated throughout British Guiana. The 1967 date marks the first year the new Bank of Guyana exercised independent monetary authority, though the coins themselves were struck at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant — the same facility that had served the colonial administration for decades.
Production continued into 1992, by which point rampant inflation had rendered the 1-cent piece effectively worthless in daily commerce.
