Judd-1767 belongs to a concentrated burst of experimental coinage activity at the Philadelphia Mint in 1896, when Chief Engraver Charles Barber produced dozens of pattern varieties testing alternative compositions for the cent. Congress had grown increasingly interested in replacing the copper-nickel Indian Head cent, and the Mint responded by striking trial pieces in pure nickel, aluminum, and various alloys — few of which advanced beyond the pattern stage. The non-magnetic designation distinguishes this piece from superficially similar nickel-alloy patterns struck the same year.
